Today we spent a couple of hours at the Petroglyph National Monument which is just about 20 minutes from Susanne & Andy. There are more than 25,000 petroglyphs in this national monument area. Many of these can be reached by following rather steep trails, but others are very visible by taking a very short (and relatively flat) walk along a couple of trails. The only charge was $1 per vehicle...so, this is a very affordable attraction and so very interesting.
The National Monument was identified in 1990, but existed as a New Mexico State Park since the 1970s. The entire monument area is a sacred area to American Indians. Archaelogists estimate that most of the images are 400 - 700 years old, but some are 2000-3000 years old. We saw many petroglyphs without exerting ourselves too much, and I am very happy to report that no one needed any bandaids or other medical attention before, during or after our excursion.
We did have one interesting event...Mom used the restroom at the Visitor Center and placed her purse in the sink so that she wouldn't have to put it on the floor. The sink was nice and dry when she placed her purse there. Unfortunately, the water faucet is motion-activated and when Mom placed her purse in the sink, the water began to run and she didn't realize it until she went back out into the Center and water was dripping down her leg. (And, yes, I'm sure it was only water!!....) Her purse and all that was inside got at least partially wet. Susanne's loaned gloves that were in the purse were dripping when removed from the purse. Mom says that this is why Tom always says "We need to keep our eye on Mom".... The good news is that everything is drying out nicely.
We'd recommend this National Monument to anyone who comes thru the Albuquerque area....
A fun day was had by all.

yay petroglyphs!
Love the blog. I think it will work great for all of us. Still loving your camera. It is taking awesome photos.
One plus side to mom and her wet purse, is that at least she was in the LADIES room. One time she went in the men's room and I didn't see her go in. I finally went looking for her and found her in the men's room. She says come on in and see how beautiful the tile is in here, pointing to the men's showers. And than she says and look how cute these little showers are for the kids. "Umm, Mom, those are not showers, they are men's urinals". ha ha...(It was at a State Park at a lake we stopped at).
Will look forward to your next new adventure tomorrow. Love ya all, Nancy
That picture of Dad and Dottie looks to me like they are putting the saws-all back in the trunk after drawing pictures on those rocks. Shame, shame, shame. Can't take them anywhere!
The blog is amazing! The pictures are wonderful and make me crave New Mexican life. I hope your eating lots of red and green chiles!
Don't forget the sopapillas!!
Now is it me or are those two going to need motorcycles when they get back home?
And what ever happened to hand operated faucet valves?
Eric, I don't think they are getting cycles when they get back home, but I am sure they are each going to get a horse. Mom's horse can drink right out of the pool.
